  About Markus

Markus Jolliff has been an avid climber since 1985. He began his career as a climbing instructor and outdoor educator in 1989 at Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo where he received a BA in Recreation Administration. For 10 years he worked for the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) throughout the Western United States, teaching rock climbing, mountaineering, backpacking, and other outdoor skills. The lure of 9 months a year of great climbing led Joshua Tree to become a place of residence, and a local guiding career grew with his cragging practice. He became an AMGA Certified Rock Instructor in 1998 in Yosemite, and after guiding for Yosemite Mountaineering School he co-founded Uprising Adventures in Joshua Tree, for which he guided 10 years.

Markus Climbing Education, both of himself and others, has always been integral to Markus’ relationship with the outdoor world. Finding that the American Mountain Guides Association held an educational philosophy akin to his own, he began to develop a relationship with the AMGA in 1996. Now he is honored to be one of a ‘handful’ nationwide who trains and certifies other SPI course providers. Markus particularly enjoys facilitating AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Courses and Exams, and teaching other classes that help climbers expand their abilities.

In his spare time, Markus Jolliff, who whole heartedly embraces Jolliffication daily, loves to climb on the cliffs of Joshua Tree National Park as much as people like ice cream and movies. When not climbing, Markus can be found tinkering around his home in north Joshua Tree, fabricating functional art, exploring the desert and mountains, rowing down a river, or hooping, dancing, and celebrating with friends.
